Does your external genitalia or labia minora cause issues with discomfort during exercise, sexual intercourse, or hygiene? While there is a large variation in “normal” female external genitalia, some women find that excess skin or tissue leads to significant discomfort, embarrassment, or issues that affect quality of life.

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that involves removal of excess hanging tissue with reshaping of the labia minora and/or clitoral hood.

Is Labiaplasty Right for Me?

Women who are unhappy with the size, shape, symmetry, or coloring of their labia are candidates for labiaplasty. Labiaplasty is appropriate for women who are experiencing discomfort or irritation as a result of large labia. Women who have realistic goals for labiaplasty are excellent candidates.

Candidates must be committed to following post-surgery instructions, including avoiding physical activities such as sexual intercourse during the recovery period. Candidates must be healthy and must have already gone through puberty. The best candidates for labiaplasty have already achieved their ideal body weight and have no pregnancy plans in the near future.

Your Labiaplasty Consultation

During your initial consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jenna Bourgeois, she will perform an evaluation of your overall health, go over your medical history, perform an examination of your external genitalia, take photographs for your medical record, and discuss the risks and potential complications of labiaplasty surgery to make sure you are properly informed on what to expect.

She will also review before and after photos of other patients who have undergone a labiaplasty surgery. This will help to give you a realistic understanding of the results that are possible through this surgery.

Dr. Bourgeois will address any concerns you may have regarding labiaplasty procedures. She will create a surgical plan, set a date for the procedure, and provide instructions to prepare you for the surgery. She will also give you an overview of the recovery process so you can prepare yourself and your schedule.

What Patients are Saying

Dr. Bourgeois is an outstanding surgeon and I would recommend her to anyone. She is friendly and kind, takes the time to make sure you understand all aspects and details of your procedure, and makes you feel very comfortable in what is a naturally uncomfortable situation. Her staff is extremely friendly and her office is easy to get in touch with and answer any questions or concerns you may have. My day of surgery and recovery went smoothly and easily because of Dr. Bourgeois’s care. My only regret is that I did not get in touch with Dr. Bourgeois sooner because she is THAT fantastic. I could not be happier with my results.

What to Expect

Labiaplasty is performed in our surgery center in Baton Rouge. It can be performed alone or in combination with other procedures. Surgery is performed under IV sedation with local anesthetic or under general anesthesia in combination with local anesthetics. The local anesthetics make this a very comfortable procedure for patients who have minimal to no discomfort during surgery.

The length of the procedure varies from patient to patient depending on how much tissue is being removed but is usually one hour or less. Dr. Bourgeois can provide you with an estimated time after your consultation. Labiaplasty is performed on an outpatient basis.

There are many different techniques used to accomplish reshaping of the labia minora. Dr. Bourgeois evaluates each patient’s anatomy to utilize the appropriate technique for the best cosmetic result.

Dr. Bourgeois uses extreme precision and skill when performing labiaplasty to ensure that each patient is provided with the best possible aesthetic results with the least amount of scarring possible. In addition to functional improvement, patients often find their post-operative labia minora to be more aesthetically pleasing.

The Recovery Process

While healing after labiaplasty, patients will need to follow the post-surgical care directions of Dr. Bourgeois closely; this will minimize any chance of complications. Bruising and swelling will be present but minimal and can be controlled with the help of rest and ice packs.

Patients will need to take time off from work to rest and recover. They must avoid physically taxing activities during recovery, including sports, heavy exercise, and intercourse.

Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor the recovery progress of the patient. The results of the labiaplasty surgery will also be evaluated. The patient will be encouraged to contact Dr. Bourgeois if they notice any unexpected complications affecting the treatment area.

The Cost of Labiaplasty Surgery

The cost of a patient’s labiaplasty surgery will depend on the treatment plan and the patient’s cosmetic goals. The overall price of the procedure may be affected by factors like anesthesia fees and the total time needed to perform the surgery.
